Celebrating 25 years: Bristol Lord Mayor's visit strengthens ties with Guangzhou
A quarter of a century of friendship between Guangzhou and Bristol is now celebrated with renewed commitment and fresh beginnings. On March 23, Lord Mayor of Bristol Henry Michallat led a delegation to Guangzhou for the first time—a journey that marks the 25th anniversary of the sister city relationship between the two cities.

The visit carries a clear purpose: to deepen cooperation in education, culture, and trade. A highlight came during a roundtable themed "25 Years of City Partnership, University Collaboration as a Catalyst for China-UK Relations" at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (Guangzhou), where a strategic partnership was signed between HKUST (GZ) and the University of Bristol.
The agreement focuses on student mobility, deep research collaboration, and mutual understanding, which is a natural fit for two cities known for innovation and cultural heritage.
Alongside it, the Guangzhou-Bristol Young Ambassador Programme was launched, creating a new bridge for young people to learn, travel, and build meaningful connections.
Reflecting on the friendship, Lord Mayor Michallat recalled a special moment: "We had the lion dance costume given by the city of Guangzhou, showcased at the Bristol Museum and Art Gallery. I had the pleasure of painting on it to awaken the lion. Crowds of people queued up along Park Street just to see it."
For students, the connection opens new possibilities. As one speaker noted, "When students in Bristol think of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, they think of innovation, new companies, technology. They're excited not only to see what's happening here, but also to bring their own startups and benefit from the deep expertise in the region."
Over the past 25 years, the friendship between the two cities has found its way into museums, gardens, and the warmth of shared smiles. Now, with new agreements and a new generation ready to lead, the next chapter begins.
