On October 26, in an uninhabited area of Yangming Mountain in Yongzhou City, Hunan Province, a drone that had completed its automated inspection mission flew in from afar and parked accurately on an intelligent inspection vehicle, which is known as the industry’s "drone aircraft carrier". Inside the inspection vehicle, there are a total of nine drones parked in the vehicle compartment and a cutting-edge LED screen on the workbench.
Thanks to the application of Beidou technology in electrical inspection, the drone is able to autonomously cruise and return to the inspection vehicle in places without communication signal. According to Yang Jiani, member of the development team, all drone inspection operations are carried out through the workbench. During the inspection, the screen presents real-time data such as the accurate position of the working drones and the remaining operation time. At the same time, the workbench also receives image data captured by the drones, allowing inspection personnel to view it anytime and anywhere to identify equipment defects.
In recent years, the field of electrical energy has continuously deepened the application of Beidou technology in areas such as electrical grid load management, power supply and energy distribution, with a focus on the improvement of safety and operational capabilities. In 2021, the development of the first intelligent drone inspection vehicle led by State Grid Hunan Electric Power Co. was put into use. It successfully applied Beidou technology to practical electricity production, addressing the drawbacks of being unable to conduct autonomous flights and transmit front-end data to the back-end in signal-absent or weak-signal areas. The vehicle is equipped with various positioning methods, including GPS, BeiDou, RTK, and image recognition, ensuring all-weather and all-region continuous communication.
It is reported that this project had passed the test of the China Electric Power Research Institute and had applied for 6 patents. Based on that, this project had been applied on-site in transmission lines in Tianjin, Changsha, Hengyang, Loudi, Zhangjiajie and other cities, demonstrating an effective performance. Through this operational mode, inspection efficiency can be increased by 3 to 6 times.
The intelligent drone inspection vehicle was widely praised by the industry insiders as soon as it was introduced. Cheng Siqi, the vice general manager of Hunan Electricity Grid Construction Co., Ltd, mentioned that just this year, this product has been sold to 14 cities in Hunan, Chongqing, Mongolia East and Tianjin, generating a production value of 32.44 million yuan. At present, the company is in discussions with 23 companies in 18 provinces and cities including Sichuan, Shaanxi, Shanghai, Guangdong and so on. There are 26 potential projects with these companies, and it is expected to reach an output value of 202 million yuan.
After completing the task, the drones automatically return to the intelligent inspection vehicle.
