On December 16th, in the mountainous region of Xiangxi, Hunan Province, at an altitude of over 1,400 meters, Tiziyan in the Luota Township in Longshan County wore a thick blanket of white snow, with temperatures dropping to minus 4 degrees Celsius, a stark contrast to the lower altitudes. Moving through the white landscape was a team dressed in red vests—they were members of the CPC service team from the State Grid Xiangxi Power Supply Company.

Tiziyan is the place in Longshan County where ice and snow appear earliest and melt latest each year. There are no residents on it, only a television frequency relay station. The 10-kilovolt Xiluo Line Tiziyan Rock branch, which supplies power to it, once it develops a fault, will impact the television broadcasting of half the county. State Grid Xiangxi Power Supply Company has set up a mobile ice monitoring post here. CPC service teams act as "sentinels," responsible for ice monitoring and line inspection.

At 9:05 AM that day, due to the steep and slippery road making it impossible to continue by vehicle, the team members began to hike up the mountain. Led by Tian Changping and Mao Yuanjiu, five team members separated into sections to start the line inspection. Using sticks for support, they faced the wind and snow, walking step by step. They had to both look up to inspect the lines and look down to find the path, checking for fallen trees on the lines, any discharge signs on insulators, cracks in the electric poles, and so on. As the fog quickly rolled in, they took out a drone to conduct aerial inspections.

In the courtyard of the relay station, Tian Changping operated a vernier caliper with frozen hands to measure the ice thickness covering the power line poles. He then reported the measurement results over the phone. At 4:00 PM, the two teams converged at pole #55, concluding their tasks for the day. The team members then started to eat dry rations to satisfy their hunger.

During this recent cold wave, a total of 963 electric power ice monitoring posts reported ice coverage information across the entire province of Hunan. State Grid Hunan Power deployed 129 emergency teams, consisting of 1,638 members, as well as 504 repair teams with a total of 8,300 personnel. Additionally, main grid manual de-icing teams were on standby, equipped with necessary tools, vehicles, materials, and logistical support. They were prepared for equipment patrols and special protection in abnormal weather conditions, conducting comprehensive inspections and addressing potential safety hazards in the power grid. The focus was on ensuring the reliable supply of electricity. (Reported by Peng Xiaotong and Xiao Dandan)
