As Shenzhen takes center stage at Expo 2025 Osaka with its "Shenzhen Week" showcase from May 12 to 14, a special trilingual video and feature series titled "Japanese in Shenzhen" captures the stories of Japanese individuals who have made the city their home.
Produced by Shenzhen Daily and EyeShenzhen, the series offers a cross-cultural lens into how Japanese professionals, researchers, and residents are contributing to the city’s innovation, community life, and international exchange.
5月12日至14日，深圳在2025年日本大阪世博会中国馆启动“深圳周”活动，全面展示城市魅力。值此契机，英文《深圳日报》和九语种国际门户网站EyeShenzhen推出中英日三语系列报道“日本人在深圳”，通过企业高管、科研人员及社区工作者的真实故事，讲述在深日本人扎根深圳、融入创新生态、促进中日文化交流的生动实践。
From high-tech hubs to healthcare corridors and international communities, these "Shenzhen stories" reflect the dynamism and openness that define the city’s role as a global innovation capital. Notably, Shenzhen and Osaka are sister cities, marking the 15th anniversary of their friendship in 2025.
从鳞次栉比的高科技园区到生机勃勃的国际社区，这些"深圳故事"恰如多棱镜，折射出深圳作为全球创新之都的活力基因与开放胸襟。特别值得关注的是，2025年正逢深圳与大阪缔结友城15周年，双城记即将写下新的篇章。

For corporate leaders like Masahiro Uchida, president of Epson Engineering (Shenzhen) Ltd. (ESL), Shenzhen is more than a manufacturing base — it is a testing ground for new ideas.

Engineer and maker culture advocate Masakazu Takasu of Switch Science has witnessed Shenzhen’s leap from low-cost production hub to innovation powerhouse. Engaged with local startups and tech communities, Takasu praises the city's ability to translate concepts into real-world applications. "Here, you’ll find cutting-edge products you can’t see anywhere else," he said.

In the medical realm, Japanese experts are driving transformative change. Dr. Shimizu Shosei, a former physician at the University of Tsukuba, is advancing proton therapy for pediatric tumors at several Shenzhen medical institutions.

Highlighting Shenzhen’s rapid decision-making and efficient resource integration, Shimizu views the city as fertile ground for developing a uniquely Chinese model of this high-precision cancer treatment.

At Shenzhen University, Professor Shunichi Takeda, a renowned DNA repair scientist, leads research into the molecular mechanisms behind cancer therapies. Formerly with Kyoto University, Takeda says the supportive academic environment and cutting-edge facilities in Shenzhen make it an ideal base for international collaboration. "China drives innovation in next-gen tech. I want more Japanese researchers to witness this firsthand," he said.

Community and culture: Building belonging
Beyond science and industry, Japanese expatriates are also active in Shenzhen’s diverse and welcoming communities. Sayaka Nakano, a former magazine editor from Osaka, has become a devoted community volunteer. Through groups like the Shenzhen Women’s International Club and Nanshan International Cultural Exchange Center, Nakano finds a strong sense of belonging. “These events help me rediscover who I am — not just a mother, but myself,” she said.
除了科研和产业，不少日本人也活跃在深圳多元友好的社区中。来自大阪的前婚礼杂志编辑中野沙耶香，如今是社区公益活动的积极参与者。她通过深圳国际妇女会、南山国际文化交流中心等平台结交朋友，建立归属感。她说：“这些活动让我重新找回自己 —— 不仅是‘妈妈’，更是‘我自己’。”
She also promotes cultural exchange, having participated in tea ceremonies and poetry readings at local expat events. "'Once you come, you’re a Shenzhener,' this is my favorite saying about the city," she said, echoing the city’s inclusive spirit.

As these stories unfold, all eyes turn to Osaka’s Expo 2025, where Shenzhen’s vibrant innovation ecosystem is on full display. Through immersive exhibits, live cultural performances, and business forums, "Shenzhen Week" is offering global audiences a glimpse into the city’s future vision: smart communities powered by technology, sustainability, and creativity.
世界的目光正投向正在举行的2025年大阪世博会。在“深圳周”期间，深圳将通过沉浸式展览、文化演出和经贸论坛，全方位展示城市如何以科技、绿色、创新构建未来智慧生活场景。
For the Japanese residents of Shenzhen featured in this series, the expo is more than a celebration — it is a shared stage where innovation meets empathy, and cultures connect through people.
“Expo 2025 is a chance for Japan and China to better understand each other's innovations and values — especially through personal exchange,” Professor Takeda said.
Echoing that spirit, Nakano extended a warm invitation: “Why not plan a future-forward journey to Osaka and explore the expo?”
